My Review of Dear Ijeawele or Feminist Manifesto by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

The book is very interesting, Chimamanda wants to bridge the gap between the two genders and also harmonise the imbalance between the two genders. The writer was sent a letter by her friend, Ijeawele on how to raise her daughter a Feminist. She responded to the letter of her friend in fifteen suggestions.

Though almost all Chimamanda’s suggestions are contradictory to our norms and tradition, but it’s the only way to get rid of the barrier that is stopping women from actualising their dreams. From these suggestions, the one that inspired me most is seventh suggestion that says “Never speak of marriage as an achievement.” This statement reflected my mind to a tragic thing that happened to a friend of my younger sister.

Another good suggestion is the fifth suggestion that says “Teach chizalum to read. Teach her to love books.” Because reading books exercises the brain, enhance concentration, encourages thirst for knowledge, develops imagination and creativity and also helps develop empathy. It will also develop confidence in her, that would encourage her to strive hard to overcome any barrier that stand between her and her career.

The Book is not only for Ijeawele to raise Chizalum a feminist but also parents that want to raise their daughters as feminist. I also suggest that every parent should read this book. And also to be included in schools curriculum. The book also made me change my mind set with some of our cultural norm.
