The Greatest Footballer of All Time

There are many great football players, who defined this sport with their performances throughout the years. Even individuals who are not football fans have heard of Maradona, Pele, Messi, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho. But how can we decide who is the GOAT (greatest of all time)? Who has influenced the sport of football the most? Who stands alone among this giants?

There will always be a lively debate about who is the greatest. People obviously have different opinions on the matter and they can usually make a great case about why their favourite player is the greatest of all time. That is why I will try to present, as objectively as I possibly can, why I think Lionel Messi is the greatest footballer of all time.

First, I would like to reveal my limitations when in comes to the topic. Some of the great players like Maradona, Pele, Van Basten, Cruyff, Di Stéfano and many others, played before my time, therefore it is hard for me to accurately judge their impact on the game of football. I have watched numerous videos of aforementioned players and I have immense respect for their abilities, but I have never seen anyone like Lionel Messi. Furthermore, I would like to make it clear that I am excluding defence players and goalkeepers from this particular debate, because as much as I do appreciate them, this list mostly includes attackers and some midfielders. Here are some honourable mentions for greatest defenders and goalkeepers: Lev Yashin, Oliver Kahn, Fabio Cannavaro, Carles Puyol, Franz Beckenbauer, Lothar Matthäus, Paolo Maldini, Cafu, Gianluigi Buffon, Iker Casillas.

So why does in my opinion Lionel Messi stand out from this elite list?

Lionel Messi is truly a football genius. Firstly, let us mention the obvious statistics which make him absolutely exceptional.
