My Connections

Many people in this generation have mixed feelings about people’s interest, whether it’s music, hobbies, art, etc.. Something that I noticed about pop culture is how judgmental society can be toward others based on their interest. While I introduce the connections I’ve made because of my interests, I want you to think if you have ever been quick to judge someone or someone’s interest even if it wasn’t intentional. I’ve personally experienced being judged based off of something I find happiness in which is k-pop and asian dramas.

Honestly, I used to be more on the judgmental side before I found an interest in more asian cultured hobbies. Ever since being more exposed to k-pop and asian dramas, I have gained a more open minded perspective to others. As many know, k-pop and asian content is very under-looked upon. Many people have mixed feelings about it because they don’t like the idea of music or shows that are popular among the western audience to be in a different language. They think it’s weird because of k-pop culture and how the idols act or look. Many people might find this ‘too feminine’ because of how both genders in the k-pop community wear make-up and are very dressy with their outfits.

However, after getting into Korean music I thought how if I can grow interest in something that many people don’t understand, then I can do the very least and not judge anyone else since I wouldn’t want that for me. Personally, I wouldn’t want to feel uncomfortable about hobbies I enjoy, so I would rather treat others in a way I would like.

Two students judging someone

Connecting this to something recent in my life, I have become more aware of my surroundings and the details around me because of the quick diaries that I did for Mr. Ziebarth’s class the first 21 days of school. Like how I gained the awareness of the sounds, colors, and actions of my days, I gained an awareness of being nonjudgmental toward anyone who finds happiness in something.

While in class I think how the classroom united with students of different interests and hobbies. I admire how diverse people can be to form a classroom that educates all of us with the same thoughts and ideas. Despite our differences, we all collaborate and feed off of each others’ ideas to help better our understanding of life and academics.
