Do You Love Your Coffee?

Delighting the senses with the familiar smell, and the warm cup we hold in our hands daily, the admirers of coffee are growing, and it is the most popular drink after water, with over 400 billion cups consumed per year. What would you think if coffee was no longer produced?

As a coffee drinker, I was appalled when I read about coffee plants facing a threat due to the impacts of climate change. Coffee plants need bright indirect sunlight, in warm temperatures, and moist soil. Climate change has an unpredictable impact on temperature and climate, detrimental to the growth of coffee plants.

While there are many species of coffee plants, 60 percent of wild coffee species are at risk of extinction, we may one day have to face a world without coffee. Often, the extent of the impact of climate change on the world is not realized, and is ignored. Many things that we take for granted like this popular drink are impacted by the changing temperatures and weather forecasts.

If we choose to take these small things for granted, and ignore climate change, not only will we face larger issues, but we would face them without our cherished morning cup of coffee.
