How to Build Your Creative Community to Be Powerful

From wavering anxieties to resourceful confidence

I had a meeting time, a Zoom link with a password, and no published agenda available. This was the start of an evening that ended up where I never imagined it would.

I was joining a small group of people online for the very first time. Our only link to each other, a few typed words on a forum.

No.

We ended the Zoom call as a resource of writers.

As a group, we had at least one common thread that connected us. All aspiring writers, some further down the line than others.

During our introductions, I realized we were sitting on an unpolished diamond. The giveaway was that almost nobody introduced themselves with their name and job title. We were all something more than what we did during the day. I liked that. It also meant that the threads that linked us were many and varied.

I spotted the core ingredients for baking an amazing community cake.

I know about building communities online. I started building one on 6th December 1999. We grew that community for almost 10 years. The website forum may no longer exist, but the people who thrived in that forum are still connected today. Still bound together in friendship and love. We are many.

Our confidence of writers rolled that Zoom call over 3 times to extend our time together. The beginning of a powerful future had begun.

We recognized and discussed the following.

You’ve been in a conversation where someone appears to be listening, but you know they are only waiting their turn to speak. They aren’t listening to you. Not really. They already know what they want to tell you and are waiting for an opportunity to jump in and unload.
